International Design (Hague System)

One application, many countries

The Hague Agreement is the central route for registering a design with effect in many countries at once — including the EU, which joined in 2008. Through a single application to WIPO's International Bureau in Geneva, applicants based in a member state can protect a design across the contracting parties. Unlike trade marks, no home registration is required; the requirements are mainly personal (residence, seat or nationality in a member state).

Examination, term and how we handle it

The Hague system itself doesn't test novelty or individual character — the substantive requirements are those of each designated country. Some (like the US) examine on the merits and can refuse extension to their territory; others check only formalities, leaving substance to any later dispute. The registration runs five years and can be renewed to at least 15 years. Agents prepare compliant representations in English or French, file via WIPO, and manage the correspondence, with attorney oversight throughout. Our flat service fee is €199 net; WIPO's fees depend on the territories and number of designs.
